Debate has an ancient and honorable twenty-five hundred year history as the heard of the western intellectual tradition. Differing forms of competitive debate can be easily traced to the original Greek and Roman educational practices. In the modern world, colleges are looking for students with the critical thinking, communication, and argumentation skills that debate teaches. According to a study by the Wall Street Journal, dedicated participation in debate has significantly increased the success rate of college applicants at all schools. State and national award winners have a 22% to 30% higher acceptance rate at top tier colleges, and being captain of the debate team 'improved an applicant's chances by more than 60% compared with the rest of the pool,' according to the report.
